what makes PLA?

What gives PLA a place in the global plastics treaty?
Polylactic acid (PLA) - a bioplastic made from renewable resources - is a proven, practical and recyclable alternative to traditional plastics. If we are serious about reducing plastic pollution and supporting sustainable development, PLA must be considered part of the global solution.
Because polylactic acid (PLA) is made from plants such as sugarcane and corn, it stores biological carbon rather than releasing fossil carbon into the atmosphere. Unlike many other alternatives, it is already being used by leading brands in food packaging, compostable coffee capsules, disposable medical supplies, 3D printing and more.
Circular economy benefits everyone - including the Global South Environmental solutions don't work if they are too expensive or complex to implement. This is where PLA comes in. Industrial composting, one of its key end-of-pipe treatment pathways, is both economical and scalable. Composting facilities can be built for up to eight times less than a plastics recycling plant and are easier to operate and maintain - ideal for regions that lack a well-developed waste treatment system. In addition, PLA's wide range of feedstock resources means that countries can localize production with investment in technical training and policy frameworks. With only 0.001% of the world's agricultural land currently used for PLA production, its expansion does not threaten food security.

PLA is even more attractive because of its multiple recycling pathways: it can be mechanically recycled like traditional plastics. It can be chemically recycled through hydrolysis, a low-energy process that maintains carbon integrity and food contact safety. It can be industrially composted, which is critical for food-contaminated packaging that cannot be mechanically recycled. This flexibility is exactly what we need in a global fragmented waste disposal system. In countries where mechanical recycling is not yet possible, industrial composting offers an immediate and low-emission option to keep materials out of landfills.
Globally, plastic pollution control material solutions are all over the world, in fact, there is no one material that can monopolize all the market, the key is to find their respective characteristics and advantages, and successfully as a solution to be engraved in the scenarios, which is the hard truth. PLA also has a lot of scenarios that are not quite suitable for the scenarios, for example, natural degradation, marine degradation, scenarios requiring toughness and so on. [Sakura R][Tulip R][Sakura R] PDA as an emerging material has also emerged, and with its high strength, high toughness, marine and other all-natural domain degradation advantages in some scenes play an irreplaceable advantage.
